Rolls-Royce and Avianca celebrated the selection of Trent engines to power up to 30 widebody jets from Airbus and Boeing in a ceremony this evening in Bogota, Colombia. The order - the first for the Trent in Latin America – was announced during the Paris Air Show and consists of Trent 1000 engines for ten firm plus ten option Boeing 787s, and Trent 700s to power ten firm A330s. The potential value of the contract to Rolls-Royce is $1.1 billion at catalogue prices. In addition, all the engines will be supported by Rolls-Royce under a 10-year TotalCare service agreement.
Avianca’s President, Fabio Villegas, said: “Our evaluation proved the Trent solution was ideal for our operations. Reliability and payload performance were key factors in our choice of the Trent 700, and while incorporating latest technologies, the new Trent 1000 retains strong family characteristics which make it the best option for our 787s.”
Peter Turner, Vice-President of Customer Business at Rolls-Royce commented:“Rolls-Royce is both proud and delighted to extend its long-standing relationship with Avianca through this decision. Avianca’s selection of the Trent engine for its entire fleet of widebody aircraft stands testament to the design commonality which runs through the engine series. The Trent engine will provide Avianca excellent performance and reliability and, coupled with the assurances provided through our TotalCare program, Rolls-Royce is committed to provide Avianca with excellence in support.”
The Trent 1000 is the launch engine for all versions of the 787 Dreamliner, which enters service in 2008. The engine has, like all Trents before, achieved on-time certification from the airworthiness authorities. This covers all variants of the 787 and the Trent continues to set the pace on the 787 programme - first engine to run and first engine to be certified.
The Trent 700 is the market leader on the A330 with a 47 per cent share of orders. The engine is the most powerful available for the A330, and will have improved fuel efficiency thanks to the incorporation of latest technologies from the Trent 1000.
