Romania receives Rolls-Royce powered warship

Thursday, 9 September 2004

Rolls-Royce played a significant role in bringing back into service two warships for the Romanian Navy, the first of which was officially handed over today.

The company helped bring Regele Ferdinand formerly Type 22 frigate HMS Coventry, back into operation as part of a £15 million contract from prime contractor BAE SYSTEMS. Regina Maria, formerly HMS London, will be delivered in 2005.

Rolls-Royce fully restored propulsion, power generation and distribution, motion control and a number of other machinery systems, including a total of eight Rolls-Royce Olympus and Tyne engines. As well as the provision of spares and tools, the company will have engineers in Romania providing technical expertise and training relating to the Navy's maintenance work.

Saul Lanyado, Rolls-Royce President - Marine, said: “We are delighted to have played our part in ensuring the Romanian Navy has efficient and reliable power for the two latest additions to its fleet.”

The Regele Ferdinand was officially named by Romanian President Ion Iliescu at a ceremony in Portsmouth.
