Rolls-Royce powers the world's navies in Royal review

Friday, 24 June 2005

The ships, which will represent 36 navies, are gathering as part of the Trafalgar 200 International Fleet Review on 28 June. Rolls-Royce is a sponsor of the event which has been organised by the Royal Navy to celebrate the life of Admiral Lord Nelson and his victory at Trafalgar 200 years ago.

Saul Lanyado, Rolls-Royce President - Marine said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Royal Navy in its Trafalgar 200 celebrations and at the same time seeing so many of our customers assembled in one place at one time.”

The fleet review has a pedigree stretching back over 600 years when British monarchs would regularly inspect the Royal Navy. This is the first review to include so many ships from different nations. The last major review was held almost 30 years ago at the time of the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

Rolls-Royce powers and equips nearly 70 navies around the world and 69 of the ships taking part in next week's event are powered by Rolls-Royce gas turbines, or are fitted with our propellers, stabilisers, electrical systems or other equipment. Naval aircraft such as the Sea Harrier and Lynx helicopter are also fitted with Rolls-Royce engines.

In addition to sponsoring Trafalgar 200, Rolls-Royce is also supporting the International Festival of the Sea, which is a family fun event being held in Portsmouth from June 30 to July 3.

An international armada of over 100 warships will weigh anchor in Portsmouth next week to be reviewed by Her Majesty the Queen - and nearly 70 of them will be powered and equipped by Rolls-Royce.

The International Fleet Review, taking place in Portsmouth on June 28, and International Festival of the Sea, also in Portsmouth from June 30 to July 3, are both part of the Trafalgar 200 programme. Details are available at www.trafalgar200.com.

At the International Festival of the Sea, Rolls-Royce is sponsoring the Sea the Future technology and innovation area and is the event sponsor on Saturday, July 2. More than 70,000 people attended the Saturday of the 2001 Festival, which Rolls-Royce also sponsored.

The company has close links with Portsmouth. Its marine electrical systems operations, which have installed systems on more than 500 naval and commercial ships, are headquartered at Cosham.

Trafalgar 200 is part of Sea Britain 2005 - a year-long programme celebrating the nation's relationship with the sea and the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
