Anti-heeling systems

Anti-heeling systems

As it name suggests, the system is designed to keep a vessel safely upright during loading and unloading. The system is particularly relevant to cargo operations - amongst them container ships, ferries, offshore supply vessels, heavy lift ships and ice-breakers.

The Rolls-Royce system uses a constant pneumatic air purge and regulating valve system to force air into the top of one tank, while venting the one on the opposite side. As soon as the ship heels due to an asymmetric load, air is let into the corresponding side tanks, thereby rapidly transferring tank water to upright the vessel.

It has no working parts in contact with water, so corrosion will not effect its operational lifetime. The air cushion in the side tanks and pipes enables quick starting and stopping of shifting operations, without risk of the dynamic shocks that may occur in pump-activated systems.
